Crédit Agricole SA Stock History

Crédit Agricole’s regional links can trace their history back to the end of the 19th century, to the Act of 1884 which among other things authorized the creation of farm unions and the foundation of local mutual banks. In 1920, the “Act of 5” created the Office National de Crédit Agricole (CNCA) to give greater autonomy to what was at the time merely a credit department of the Ministry of Agriculture. Crédit Agricole’s inception came to be when the government passed an act to privatize CNCA on January 18, 1988. It was then that the CNCA was transformed into a public limited company and became fully independent from the government. In the late 1980s Crédit Agricole begun diversifying by setting up its life insurance subsidiary Predica, in 1986 and its property unit Pacifica, in 1990. The Group expanded beyond France when it acquired stakes in Banco Ambrosiano Veneto (Italy) in 1989 and Banco Espirito Santo (Portugal) in 1991. The acquisition of Banque Indosuez in 1996 was perhaps the most important milestone in Credit Agricole’s history as it marked its transition into corporate and investment banking.

In 2001, CNCA was listed on the stock market under the name Crédit Agricole S.A. In June 2003, the Group took a massive step with the acquisition of Credit Lyonnais and in 2005, Crédit Agricole S.A. embarked on an ambitious quest to expand its international reach.

Between 2006 and 2008, Crédit Agricole S.A. completed several retail banking acquisitions in Egypt, Ukraine, Greece and Italy, and expanded in Portugal. In 2011, Crédit Agricole continued its expansion strategy in Italy, with the acquisition of 172 branches from Intesa Sanpaolo S.p.A.; while n 2012 the Group signed agreements on the sale of Emporiki to Alpha Bank and the sale of the CLSA and Cheuvreux brokers.

Part of the CAC 40 (the benchmark French stock market index) Crédit Agricole reached the top of the index in August 2021.
